Hawaii’s location on our planet is unique. The Hawaiian Islands are the most isolated lands on Earth and the difference between being a tropical paradise and a barren desert lies in the consistent trade winds and tall mountains. Without the trade winds, all life in Hawaii would struggle to exist, if it could exist at all. As the trade winds travel thousands of miles across the open ocean, they pick up moisture, and when those winds come in contact with Hawaii’s tall mountains, the wind flows up the mountain slopes, cools, and produces the most vital of resources - fresh water.

Due to the remoteness of Hawaii, the logistics of transporting anything to the islands is a challenging and expensive task. Of course, transporting enough freshwater to fulfill Hawaii’s demand would never ever be a viable option. As long as the trade winds blow, Hawaii will remain a tropical island paradise with enough water to thrive.

Hawaii is also the most petroleum-dependent state in the nation, but it doesn’t have to be! Just like freshwater, sunshine is an abundant naturally occurring resource in Hawaii. The Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative (HCEI) has a stated goal of running Hawaii with 100% renewable energy by 2045.

Residents in Hawaii pay almost 2.5 TIMES the national average for our electricity. This is largely due to expensive shipping and dirty crude oil from Russia, the Middle East, Africa, and other Pacific Rim producers to Hawaii’s shores. The crude oil arrives in the Honolulu port area on Oahu where it is refined and loaded onto fuel barges to be distributed to Maui County, Kauai, and the Big Island of Hawaii. There is no inter-island pipeline, and each Island’s grid is a “stand-alone” system.

Hawaiian Electric Industries Inc. is the largest supplier of electricity in the Islands and operates as HECO on Oahu, MECO in Maui County, and HELCO on Hawaii Island. Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) is the electric utility on the Garden Isle of Kauai. The United States in 2018 generated less than 1% of its electricity using oil. In that same year, Hawaii generated 61.3% of electricity from oil and 11.9% from coal.

Just like it doesn’t make sense to ship freshwater to Hawaii, it doesn’t make sense to put Petroleum on an oil tanker and ship it to the sunniest place on earth.
